Trevi Fountain is one of the must-see destinations for all tourists, a monument capable of fascinating visitors of all ages.
It is located in Piazza di Trevi and is the largest of the famous Roman fountains.
It was built on the facade of Palazzo Poli by Nicola Salvi following a competition announced by Pope Clement XII.
Construction began in 1732, entrusted in 1759 to Pietro Bracci, who completed it with his son in 1762.
The name derives from the toponym “Regio Trivii,” referring to the confluence of three streets in the square, or from the triple water outlet of the original fountain shows terminal of the Virgin Aqueduct.
The composition of the entire work pays homage to the sea. The fountain is set in a large rectangular pool surrounded by a walkway.
Scenographically it is dominated by a rocky cliff that occupies the entire lower part of the Poli Palace.
In the center we find a large niche bordered by columns: here stands the statue of Oceanus depicted as he rides on a shell-shaped chariot drawn by two winged horses.
The two smaller side niches bear statues of Salubrity and Abundance, both by Filippo della Valle.
Still on either side of the main arch: two bas-relief panels depicting Agrippa as he approves the construction of the Aqua Virgo aqueduct,“ and the ”virgin" showing the soldiers where the water springs are located.
The fountain is adorned with numerous marble decorations depicting plant species, while near the four Corinthian columns that support the upper elevation are statues of “The Abundance of Fruit” by Agostino Corsini, “The Fertility of the Fields” by Bernardino Ludovisi, “The Wealth of Autumn” by Francesco Queirolo, and “The Amenity of Gardens” by Bartolomeo Pincellotti.
